There's a great deal of collapse that is now quite inevitable and still we talk only in terms of "stupid preppers" or "climate anxiety" - Even the media claiming to be the ones sounding the alarm are, at heart, deniers
It's totally fair to fret over your own lifestyle, but couching it in terms of concern for future generations without making any attempt to reason out what that time period is actually going to be like, when there are some extremely obvious hard limitations on it, is just insulting
The same fucking people will hand-wring about "extractive" industries and also be happy to indefinitely extrapolate from a fifty year history of costs going down in some industry. You can't do that, that's what extraction means
I think it's very cool to play at helping out imaginary people hundreds of years from now. To do that, I think you have to do like that scene in Apollo 13, you have to force yourself to figure out how to build things using only the materials they have available
If you aren't interested in being realistic about the obvious specifics of where the future of humanity is going, you should stop fretting and just enjoy the gasoline.
@chris__martin One decent sized metallic asteroid would have all the ore we'd need for a long long time. Getting it here and extracting it and everything else related would take so much energy etc though.
@chris__martin It's fine. We've entered the Great Filter and won't see the other side. May take a few decades yet for that to become obvious, and centuries for us to completely die out.
