Always a pc, never a dm. I prefer to just be one of the party and do my thing. The sunday night group has mostly done D&D 5e for the decade I've been playing with them, with a few excursions to Dungeon World and Crows: Fortune or Death (playtest 2).
5e just seems to get more and more complicated as time goes on. Too much stuff to track, too many items/weapons/spells/whatever are essentially the same but with different 'flavour' and sometimes odd usage restrictions. A lot of tactics involved in the games which can be fun but becomes same-same after a while.
I like the rules-light nature of Crows. The real time timer to hurry us along before the torch/lantern possibly going out was great. Way better than the everyone has dark vision and 17 things on the initiative tracker of 5e. Hope we play more Crows (probably when playtest 3 comes out in October).
Because of liking how Crows felt, I fell into the rabbit hole of looking at other rules-light things and stumbled upon Electric Bastionland. Watched a three session game of it online, then a bit of one in Mythic Bastionland. Zero vtt maps seemed to be involved for combat. Theatre of the mind. General mapping for travel I guess. Even if you were to add vtt I don't think it'd slow things down too much.
Bought both of those Bastionland games in hardcopy to peruse. Might try to convince one of the two dm in the group to try one or both of these in the future. Also waiting for my hardcopy of Into the Odd reloaded to arrive.
In the mean time, going to try to not be as passive-bored in the 5e games for the next while. I do have some items lost in my character's inventory that could be used for hijinks, if I think about them hard enough.
