A close-up, profile photo of a relatively large bird (33–36 cm / 13–14 in long) perched on the edge of a light-coloured stone basin. The bird has a deep purplish-brown head, a striking orange-red eye, and a distinct patch of silvery-white, scale-like feathers on the side of its neck. Its wings and back are a mix of gray and brown feathers with pale edges, giving them a scalloped appearance. Clue: This South American native looks like your everyday city pigeon went to a high-end salon. Look closely at those unique, silvery-white "scales" dressing up its neck! Fun fact: Despite being a wild forest and farmland bird, it has actually expanded its territory massively into big cities over recent decades, adapting flawlessly to urban life just like its famous rock pigeon cousins.
