I cannot get behind the idea that kids need to be reading things in school from topics tailored to their interests. That's what they should be reading outside of school. You have the entire rest of your life to read whatever you want.

@chris__martin You can do both. Required reading plus choose-from-these-options was how it went in my high school English classes (Mid 80s). The teacher had a big shelf full of optional novels and such from a wide variety of genres.

She was amused when I noted one of them was a direct rip off of a Heinlein novel, Tunnel in the Sky, which itself was basically Lord of the Flies and I got assigned THAT next.
