It strikes me that this push by Mastodon™️ GmbH to protect their trademark could be a move toward marketing Mastodon as Mastodon with mastodon.social, which feels like a step toward centralization.
Let’s say at some point dot-social, as the largest instance, decided not to federate with the rest of us anymore to ‘better manage the user experience’. Lots of people would be cut off from each other but the network effects of leaving all their contacts on dot-social would keep many of them locked in.
It reinforces my decision to experiment with Mastodon-compatible alternative platforms like #GoToSocial. One thing I’m really beginning to appreciate about GTS’ design paradigm, is that it moves the focus away from large, centralized servers to empowering folks to host their own single/small Fediverse presence, which makes consolidation/monopolization impossible.
Anyway, just a thought. 🤷♂️
