Upgrade All The Things!

I finally noticed that my friend Ralph’s blog, hosted on this same server, was actually still on WordPress 2.0.11 (circa 2007 ?) and knuckled down to re-discover how to upgrade from there to version 4.x

This time it went way easier because… I don’t know. Maybe not all of the Synology NAS this stuff now hosts on is as weird and obtuse to me as it was last March.

I should make notes, some day. I suck at documentation.

I’m also still only scratching the surface of what I can run on that little box of disks.

Mysteries of the Dark Forest

A few images I captured from my parent’s acreage this past weekend. There’s all manner of things and beasts in amongst the trees.

Doorways to Yesteryear

I took a short trip to a fairly out of the way location in southern Alberta this past weekend to see this massive rusting pile of cars that has been accumulated over many decades. There’s opportunities out the wazoo for an photography project there.

I shall return for a more in depth exploration at a future date.

Lip Service to purported values and mission statement

I saw a journalist tweet about their article, talking about transgender kid wanting to use their identified gender bathroom, and raises point that the trustee is being asked to shush

School trustee gag rules turn elected officials into tame sheep

Which points to the trustee’s blog entry for details on the bathroom issue

Local mother accuses Edmonton Catholic School Board of discrimination

Simpleton in me is saying… Just make all bathrooms unisex and be done with it.

The journalist was making a point that the trustee hasn’t been told to shush on an equally big issue around admittance requirements for academic schools vs non academic ones in the catholic system and catchment areas etc. Inclusion, poor being asked to pay for bussing away from area to other schools, etc. All fascinating, to see the stated principles etc being used to show the school boards and system policies are just a bunch of for-show-only.

Motion Regarding Catchment Areas for All ECSD High Schools, Part 1
Motion Regarding Catchment Areas for All ECSD High Schools, Part 2

I’m biased, being a product of public schools and not having any option other than public where I lived (aside from not being required to go to church after I got to an age where I decided it wasn’t for me).

I know what I’m thinking is why do we have separate school systems, or even private schools, and why bus kids across cities away from home neighborhood area schools at all. I am a simpleton though, thinking just mash them all into nearest schools and fund and support equally.

Down another rabbit hole I go

I’ve been putting off getting my own art printer for ages now. It was good enough to visit a friend and print on his Epson 3880 whilst kibitzing and having a beer. Since moving to a new city last year, I’ve not had this kind of opportunity to print and so I finally caved and got the very exact same printer. (Both for familiarity with use and pleased with it’s capabilities).

First test print came off beautifully. Sure, I have some re-learning and tweaking to do, but it’s a great start.

Next up, getting a dust cover to keep the dust and spiders and whatnot out of the works…
