No matter what kind of field you may get into, even as a amateur hoping to get their break, never sell yourself short. Don’t accept working for free or peanuts just because you want to “get noticed” or get your foot in the door so to speak. Listen to Harlan. If your work is worth using, it’s worth being paid fairly for it.

Harlan just hates how people would dare to give their stuff away for free.
Hey Harlan,
It’s simple supply and demand buddy - there are way more people out there who can write good shit that there are people willing to buy it. Sure some actors and a few writers/producers/directors etc. get paid big bucks, but then the supply / demand curve breaks down - it becomes all about how many people want to buy the services of *one* person.
So Harlan, if you want to get paid for taking a piss as you so eloquently put it, you need to get your name out there enough that the average TV watching moving going public wants to see something with the name “Harlan Ellison” in it, *thats why* you need to be giving freebies away until the cows come home, to get that recognition.
That being said, no, B5 wasn’t going to get you any real publicity, so I’d have told WB to pay me too.
