Economic downturn finally hit Calgary
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009I’m starting to receive email brochureware from companies I haven’t heard from in years. They are trying to peddle their wares. I’ve never bought from most of them, although I do remember getting quotes or other information 2-5 years ago from most of them.
Seems like they must be starting to feel the pinch and are reaching into their contact database as far back as possible for the hope that someone might throw some $$ their way.
On a similar but different note, the jobs in my area of expertise are a bit fewer in number on the career websites, but also those jobs are going wanting.
I have had head hunters with a 5 year old copy of my resume pestering me every week or two recently. They’re looking for people to fill 1 year contracts as opposed to some of the 3 month or 6 month contracts I have been called about in the past.
The head hunters certainly are scraping the bottom of their resume barrel to dig up such old contacts, and only have longer term contracts ( == may as well be employee ). This tells me all the more fresh people they had on tap are already busy with work. They are probably in hunker-down mode, possibly as employees somehwere, to ride out this downturn.
Interesting combination of data points.
